Mini Radio Academy

 

The "Mini Radio Academy" is a workshop programme curated by Berit Schuck and Julia Tieke in collaboration with Radio Tram, Alexandria's first independent online radio. The "Mini Radio Academy" aims to explore the grounds for culture critical radio and audio art in Alexandria and Egypt. Its first edition took place from 18-20 October 2012 at the Goethe-Institut Alexandria.

„Open your ears!“ A sound walk through the neighbourhood
This walk will let you listen closely to your environment, exposing your ears to every sound around you,
rediscovering and reactivating the sense of hearing.

„Open your eyes!“ A mapping experiment in the neighbourhood
This walk will lead you through the neighbourhood of the Goethe-Institut by subjective and arbitrary criteria
like following passers-by, conceptual rules and random decisions.

Talk Shows (in Arabic):
Presenters of radio talk shows usually moderate talks with people from all backgrounds, entertain their listeners with music or give advice to them. But they can also take up social issues and stimulate discussions. The participants of this workshop will test the ground for a daily talk show between Alexandria and Cairo.

Reporting local topics (in Arabic):
Participants will learn how to find, research and approach local topics as a journalist. The introduction will be followed by your own practice on topics related to Alexandria, including interviews and script writing for the radio.

Short radio drama (in English/Arabic):
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to ultra short radio art. They will learn how to create their own radio drama, sound art or documentary experiments of up to one minute.

Music journalism (in English/Arabic):
This workshop will provide a real-life opportunity for the participants to engage with music and musicians. Discussions that follow will serve an avenue to value and express their own observations and criticisms,
which will then be used to produce a review.

Talk Shows (in Arabic):
The participants of this workshop will learn how to plan a talkshow about cultural topics and how to pitch their idea. This will include preparing topics, choosing the right guests and learning how to talk to them live on the radio.

11.30-12.30 Workshop 3
Radio activism: banat wa bass (in Arabic):
The workshop will introduce participants to the Cairo based online radio „banat wa bass“ (Girls only). They are then asked to go out in the streets and research topics related to girls and women in Alexandria, or to create
a concept for radio (talk) shows within this field.

11.30-12.30 Workshop 4
Radio in public space (in Arabic/English):
Over the past years independent radio makers developed new ways of listening to the radio and created „sonic maps“, „radio ballets“ or „audio walks“. In this workshop we will explore the field of contemporary radio art and work on a scenario for listening to the radio in public places.
